THE WASHINGTON SCHOOL FOR GIRLS

Utilizing our in-depth approach to successful campaign planning and execution, combined with our understanding of the Washington, DC landscape, we evolved the Building Dreams plan that leveraged the campaign’s central strengths: a phenomenal funding partner who pledged half of the total campaign, a superior educational leader and board, as well as cutting-edge infrastructure to support the campaign. On January 7, 2026, after a three-year capital campaign, Washington School for Girls (WSG) opened its doors in an all-new 33,000 square foot state of-the art facility that has been called “an investment in the girls east of the river.”

Addressing the critical issue of closing the income and education gap by providing the highest-level educational experience, Washington School for Girls is an all-scholarship Catholic school serving students in grades 3-8 primarily from Wards 7 and 8 in the District of Columbia. Originally on two separate campuses, WSG was presented with the transformative opportunity to build a state-of-the-art school at THEARC, Washington’s premiere campus of 14 nonprofits, the largest center for nonprofit collaboration in the country. Schultz & Williams delved deep into the case for support and focused on the role of the School’s significant leadership to reach the campaign goal and bring the new school to fruition.

Highlights

Embracing the Case

By grounding the case in the School’s mission and vision and framing the campaign as a unique opportunity to leverage an exceptional community partner’s lead gift, the campaign gained the essential momentum needed for completion.

Mobilizing Leadership

Long-time volunteer leaders dedicated to the mission and vision of the School were the true catalysts for success. Board members, the Campaign Committee, and other key leaders mobilized quickly to engage their personal networks, expanding the donor pool and reinforcing leadership ownership of the campaign.

Building Momentum

Following a series of external interviews, we collaborated with WSG to establish rapid engagement of both existing and new major gift prospects. Feasibility study findings were rolled out to prospective donors as a group and followed by monthly house party gatherings. Simultaneously, major gift prospects were identified and cultivation strategies and meetings were put in place.

The Challenge

In order for the campaign to succeed, Washington School for Girls needed to increase its visibility among the philanthropic community of Washington. The School had long been in need of a transformative move to bring both of its campuses together in Southeast DC. With the commitment from its community partner, the School became a member of a consortium comprised of well-branded nonprofit organizations at THEARC including DC Central Kitchen (Jose Andres), Children’s National Hospital, Washington Ballet and Levine School of Music. In addition, the philanthropic leadership of Washington DC has long been fundamental to the founding and growth of THEARC. Now WSG’s challenge was to leverage this partnership so that donors would recognize the strength of this effort and its importance for the future of the School and its students.

The Solution

After in-depth interviews and quantitative analysis of WSG’s lead and prospective donors, S&W framed a campaign plan that leveraged its president, board and volunteer leadership to extend WSG’s visibility into new donor networks. We recommended a new level of activity and public outreach for the school and for its President, Beth Reeves, in addition to a robust multi-platform strategy. All activities were closely managed by a seasoned, expert Development leader at WSG who, with her team, brought tremendous organization and dedication to the campaign. The S&W team provided campaign counsel at the start of the lead gift phase toadvise on strategy and key fundraising challenges. In her remarks at the ribbon cutting ceremony, WSG President Beth Reeves said, “This is not the finish line, but the foundation of what we can do for our girls.”
