Highlights

Growth Opportunities

Fundraising efforts were concentrated among a small group of major donors, with opportunities to strengthen pipeline development, formalize processes, and build senior-level leadership to support long-term philanthropy strategy and execution.

Setting Clear Goals

S&W helped to build a proactive, strategy-driven philanthropy function aligned to the strategic plan, with a diversified pipeline, stronger retention, clearer messaging, and a Senior Director of Philanthropy to lead efforts.

Strategic Growth Roadmap

S&W delivered a data-driven assessment and roadmap, strengthening pipeline development, clarifying roles, enhancing infrastructure, and supporting the hiring of a Senior Director to enable scalable, sustainable fundraising growth.

The Challenge

As NMSI advanced its 2027 Strategic Plan, the organization faced a critical inflection point: while its programs, leadership, and impact were strong, its philanthropy function had not evolved to support long-term growth. The Business Development team was operating at maximum capacity and lacked a senior leader solely dedicated to generating philanthropic revenue. Fundraising efforts were largely reactive and heavily reliant on a small group of major corporate and institutional donors, creating revenue concentration risk and limiting predictability.

Donor retention and pipeline development lagged sector benchmarks, and internal roles and processes lackedconsistency. At the same time, NMSI operated in an increasingly competitive STEM funding landscape, where clear impact articulation and diversified revenue streams are essential. To achieve its ambitious goals, the organization needed a more disciplined, proactive, and strategy-driven approach to fundraising aligned with its long-term vision, as well as an experienced development professional to lead these efforts.

The Solution

Schultz & Williams conducted a comprehensive assessment of NMSI’s philanthropy function, including interviews with key stakeholders, analysis of 3,500+ donor transactions, and benchmarking against peer organizations. Using these insights, S&W developed a clear, actionable roadmap centered on four priorities: aligning fundraising with the strategic plan, building a multi-year donor pipeline, strengthening impact messaging, and improving internal infrastructure.

S&W supported the hiring and onboarding of a new Senior Director of Philanthropy, clarified roles and responsibilities across the Business Development team and leadership, introduced disciplined portfolio management and forecasting practices, and created tools to support proposal development and pipeline tracking. As a result, NMSI is positioned with a more proactive, strategy-driven approach and a stronger foundation for sustainable, scalable fundraising growth.
