Diabetes Leadership Council (in tandem with Children with Diabetes and Diabetes Patient Advocacy Coalition)

The Diabetes Leadership Council (DLC) is a power-house patient advocacy organization with the most specialized and in-depth understanding of key issues impacting diabetes patients. Established in 2013, DLC unites former leaders of national diabetes organizations, dedicated to securing effective, affordable health care and a discrimination-free environment for every person with diabetes. DLC affirms that everyone in the U.S. should have affordable access to all medications, devices and services needed to ensure healthy daily diabetes management. DLC regularly writes letters, issues statements, and conducts campaigns as part of its policy advocacy work.

Highlights

Collaborative Strategic Planning

S&W partnered with the Diabetes Leadership Council (DLC) to facilitate a participatory strategic planning process that engaged its staff, Board, and key stakeholders to develop a meaningful and actionable plan defining the path towards the desired future for DLC and the communities it serves.

Strengthening Key Partnerships

In tandem with the planning for close partners, DPAC and CWD, DLC’s plan will help expand and deepen its strategic partnerships with other institutions, policymakers and incorporate an equity focus across all that it does to increase its impacts on the lives of people with diabetes.

Facilitating Inclusive Processes

As a convener, facilitator, researcher, pathfinder, and strategic thinker, S&W facilitated a structured process and provided formats and tools through which information gathering and discussion took place, providing guidance and insight throughout. Our method in guiding highly engaging strategic planning is to be intentional and inclusive to generate shared ownership of the final plan.

The Challenge

Over 37 million people in the United States have Type 1 (T1) or Type 2 (T2) diabetes. Diabetes is the 7th leading cause of death in the country and cases have more than doubled in the last 20 years. In addition to health impacts, those affected have medical costs that are double the costs for other Americans, and collectively the medical costs and lost work and wages for people with diabetes totals $327 billion annually. The complexity of the U.S. healthcare system and insurance industry, competing interests among key actors, and economic disparities across economic, cultural, and ethnic groups in our country present obstacles to patients needing life-saving drugs and devices.

The Solution

In response to the issues and needs of the community, DLC, together with its partner DPAC, has emerged to fill vital needs in the diabetes patient advocacy landscape. DLC is seen as a highly competent organization, known for its ability to translate complex issues to lawmakers, the general public and its advocates in an understandable way. To continue and strengthen their efforts, DLC partnered with S&W to facilitate a participatory and inclusive strategic planning process to help them develop an actionable plan that engaged its staff, Board, and key stakeholders. With their new set of goals, DLC will expand and deepen its strategic partnerships with other organizations and policymakers and incorporate an equity focus across all that it does to increase impacts on the lives of people with diabetes.
