Compass Pro Bono
Compass Pro Bono strengthens local nonprofit ecosystems by connecting skilled business professionals with nonprofit leaders who need strategic support. Through pro bono consulting projects and board matching, Compass helps organizations build capacity, sharpen strategy, and deepen impact in their communities. Founded in Washington, DC, Compass has expanded to Philadelphia, Chicago, the Twin Cities, and now New York City, with a model rooted in local relationships, high-quality volunteer engagement, and practical support for nonprofit leaders.
Highlights
Testing Readiness for Growth
Compass was preparing for growth and needed to understand whether its campaign vision, leadership, donor base, and fundraising infrastructure were ready to support the next stage of expansion.
Building the Campaign Roadmap
Our engagement focused on testing campaign readiness, building a clear roadmap, and guiding implementation in support of long-term organizational growth.
Turning Strategy into Momentum
S&W provided feasibility analysis, campaign strategy, donor engagement support, and hands-on campaign management that helped Compass exceed its Year 1 goal.
The Challenge
Compass Pro Bono had built a respected, high-touch model with strong loyalty from volunteers, donors, and nonprofit partners. As Compass Pro Bono considered a growth campaign, leadership needed to understand whether its case, leadership, donor base, and fundraising systems were ready to support an ambitious effort. Following the feasibility study, Compass Pro Bono also needed hands-on campaign counsel to translate strategy into action: refining the case, prioritizing prospects, supporting donor conversations, activating board members, and managing campaign momentum. The work required a partner who understood pro bono service, intermediary funding models, local nonprofit ecosystems, and the systems-change value of strengthening many organizations through one scalable platform.
The Solution
Building the feasibility, S&W supported Compass Pro Bono through the campaign strategy and execution for their Strategic Growth Fund. S&W provided hands-on campaign counsel, including donor strategy, campaign management, messaging refinement, board engagement, prospect prioritization, and preparation for key donor conversations. This support helped Compass Pro Bono translate campaign readiness into action and maintain momentum through the first year of fundraising. In the first year, Compass Pro Bono exceeded its Growth Fund revenue goal by approximately 21%, advanced 58% of the way toward its catalytic capital goal, and secured the philanthropic support needed to launch New York City operations, and strengthen the platform needed to expand and deepen impact across local nonprofit ecosystems.
