The Wetlands Institute (TWI) was founded in the late 1960s to create a world-class research, education, and conservation center at the New Jersey shore that would educate people of all ages about the beauty and wonders of the coastal environment, and the importance of that environment to their daily lives.
TWI is dedicated to conducting extensive, meaningful research using sound scientific techniques to uncover the evidence and drive public discussion around the importance of preserving coastal ecosystems. Additionally, they focus on sharing their findings with other researchers and educators from all nations, providing learning opportunities for every generation, and demonstrating conservation practices to fulfill their mission.
Highlights
Achieving Strategic Goals
Following a successful endowment campaign led by S&W, TWI needed new support to achieve ambitious goals, and build a solid foundation for a sustainable future.
INCREASING REVENUE
S&W designed and implemented a comprehensive fundraising plan that focused on expanding the major gift and midlevel giving programs and delivered a year over year increase of 40.5% in 2024 over 2023.
STRATEGIC FORESIGHT
TWI saw the need to invest in its fundraising program in advance of a future capital campaign and partnered with S&W beginning in 2023 to qualify and cultivate prospective donors for this future campaign.
The Challenge
TWI faced a staffing challenge because of its location in Stone Harbor, New Jersey, along with their increased investment in research, conservation, and education to build coast resilience and improve the health of the marsh and the wildlife within it there was a need to expand donor engagement.
TWI needed additional support to build and implement a comprehensive fundraising plan while facing the challenge of growing donor engagement and maintaining financial stability while investing in major and mid-level donor relationships, corporate sponsorships, and grant applications.
The Solution
S&W provided ongoing StaffSolutionsTM, to help TWI build their fundraising program starting in 2023. The focus was on expanding TWI’s major gift program and updating the annual fund strategies. S&W worked closely with the Executive Director to support TWI in achieving their strategic fundraising goals. This included designing and implementing a comprehensive development plan, launching a mid-level giving program and developing a comprehensive communications strategy to support expanded fundraising efforts.
Additionally, the staffing engagement involved working with the Executive Director, board members and development committee members to increase their major gift fundraising and managing a portfolio of donors.
