As United Way of New York City looked to deepen its impact and grow philanthropic investment, leadership recognized the need for a clearer, more cohesive fundraising strategy. While UWNYC benefits from a strong brand and long-standing relationships, the organization faced a complex and competitive funding landscape requiring sharper differentiation, improved systems, and stronger alignment between strategy and execution.

To move forward effectively, UWNYC needed an objective assessment of its current fundraising program, insight into comparable organizations and donor expectations, and a clear understanding of the resources and structures required to support sustainable growth. The challenge was to translate institutional strengths into a focused, scalable development strategy that could inspire confidence among donors, board members, and partners alike.

The Solution

Schultz & Williams partnered with UWNYC to conduct a comprehensive fundraising assessment and strategy design process. The engagement began with a detailed review of organizational materials, systems, and fundraising infrastructure, complemented by a landscape analysis of peer organizations and broader philanthropic trends. Schultz & Williams facilitated in-depth interviews with UWNYC leadership, staff, funders, and board members to surface insights on strengths, gaps, and opportunities.

Using these findings, the team collaborated with UWNYC to design a tailored development strategy outlining revenue potential, priority funding sources, staffing and system needs, and approaches to donor engagement and prospect management. The work culminated in a clear, actionable roadmap—including a prioritized prospect list and implementation framework—positioning UWNYC to strengthen its fundraising performance and support long-term impact.
