FRIENDS OF WASHINGTON CROSSING PARK
The mission of Friends of Washington Crossing Park (FWCP) is to share the powerful story of General George Washington’s daring crossing of the Delaware River on Christmas Night 1776 and interpret its ongoing impact on world history for both today’s citizens and future generations. The Friends collaborate with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, providing interpretive and educational programming at Washington Crossing Historic Park.
Highlights
Readiness Assessment
FWCP sought guidance to assess their readiness for a comprehensive campaign focused on creating new interpretive experiences at the Park. With that readiness work complete, the campaign moved into implementation.
Campaign Vision
The goal of the campaign was to raise $2.5 million to support interior renovations to historic buildings, enhance exhibits, and create new interpretive experiences at the Park in preparation for—and throughout—the 2026 semi quincentennial celebration.
Strategic Support
Schultz & Williams offered expertise in assessing campaign readiness, working with Board and staff to build capacity for a campaign, and campaign planning and implementation.
The Challenge
At the start of this campaign, FWCP was a smaller organization with less than $1 million in operating budget. They needed to build organizational capacity and resources to be able to implement a slate of new projects at the Park leading up to 2026. The organization had an ambitious plan to create a world-class experience at the Park, drawing up the latest historical research and interpretive strategies, which required significant fundraising.
The Solution
Schultz & Williams worked with the staff and board to: 1) determine campaign readiness; 2) support building capacity for the campaign; 3) determine the campaign goal and create a case for support; 4) create a campaign timeline and prospect pipeline; and 5) advise on campaign implementation. The initial campaign goal was $2 million; it has been raised to $2.5 million, of which nearly $2.1 million has been secured, with pledges for the remaining $400,000. This impressive performance was due to capitalizing on new funding streams made available for 2026, and Executive Director Jennifer Martin’s excellent cultivation and stewardship of individual donors, local businesses, and government agencies. FWCP has also expanded their internal fundraising capacity by hiring a Director of Development and a Development Coordinator.
